Strass im Zillertal to Bishopshofen (Austria)

Leaving the Honey shop we headed towards the Hochkönig mountain, knowing we had over 85 miles to cover wit 2114 metres to climb we started early.

Gradients of climbs for the day,….

Leaving the Strass im Zillertal from the beautiful AirBnB hosted by Gerhard in Reith im Alpbachtal early we covered the distance on the flat valley floor as quick as possible but soon started the climb towards the ski resorts Söll, Elmau, St. Johan im Tirol in cold rain, the climbs were numberous but not long, with many drops, we had lunch at Hochfilzen having climbed 1001 metres and covered 45 miles and dried out after the rain stopped.

The afternoons ride through stunning hills remained much the same until 3:30pm when we started the 760m climb to the top of the Hochkönig, appropriately named the “Hochkönig Strasse Hell”. I (Karl) struggled with the climb, where the gradients varied from 10% to 18%, Simon was a great psychological help, and by 4:15pm I reached the top. After another big drop we had the final climb of 244 metres, which again nearly killed me, with Simon looking like he’d been for a short walk.

The descent into Bishopshofen was trivial, a matter or easing of the brakes for 35 minutes, Simon hitting a top speed of 46.8mph.
