Basel to Zurich

Leaving Saint Louis at 730pm in the morning we headed into Basel past the Roche Pharmaceuticals (building is a white cheese grater) following the Rhine upstream. After about half an hour the town thinned out and we crossed into Switzerland (see border crossing below).

For most of the day we followed roads along the Rhine, but after about 20 miles upstream from Basel the Rhine thinned and was dammed by a large Hyro-Electric plant (see below), the highest point reachable by boat on the Rhine.

As we approached Zurich the large industrial suburbs of Zurich made the journey a bit of a grind, along with the heat from the road. We arrived at Zurich Centre at about 4pm.
